The arrests resulted from an incident on Monday, Oct. 23 just after 5:30 p.m., when Yorktown Police responded to Dick's Sporting Goods at the Jefferson Valley Mall at 650 Lee Blvd. for a reported larceny.
According to the department, police soon learned that the suspects drove off in a gray Audi sedan. Officers were able to quickly find this vehicle on the Taconic State Parkway in the area of Route 202 and pulled it over.
Inside the Audi, police allegedly found stolen merchandise from Dick's Sporting Goods and determined that the two suspects had hidden the items in a bag and had made no attempt to pay for them before leaving. Authorities also found a security tag detach device used to remove tags from clothing, police said.
The two suspects, identified as Bronx residents Mary Alice Fairwell, age 41, and Henry Hampton Cain, age 48, were both charged with petit larceny. Additionally, Fairwell was charged with:
- Possession of burglar's tools;
- Fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Both suspects were later released on their own recognizance and are scheduled to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Thursday, Nov. 9.
